After active treatment is complete, all patients are given retainers to wear. They usually are removable, but fixed or permanent retainers are sometimes necessary. Both verbal and written instructions are given at the retainer insertion or fitting appointment. The retainers are adjusted at intervals of 1 month and 2 months, and then most patients are seen at 3 or 4 month intervals for 18 to 22 months, if required. Within the given time frame, lost or broken retainers must be replaced at patient expense.
During active treatment with braces, or during the retention phase of treatment, many of our patients become interested in having their teeth whitened. Depending upon the original tooth color or shade of enamel, this can be accomplished via one of the following options:(1) Use of toothpaste which contains whiteners and mild abrasives; (2) teeth whitening kits with strips of material which contain bleaching agents and which adhere to the teeth; (3) Clear trays and tubes of whitening agent are available from the orthodontist for home use; (4) A single treatment procedure, performed by the orthodontist. Whitening is accomplished in approximately two hours and could be effective for 24 months. Dr. Waitkus offers this service using the ZOOM Technology, which employs the use of a bleaching agent and a special light system.
